Discovering I love my gym membership

For a long time, I wasn’t interested in joining a gym.

  • I didn’t want to commit the extra time to the commute.

I was unwilling to pay membership fees when I could workout for free at home. I have a spare bedroom that I’ve converted into my home gym. I’ve invested into a treadmill, yoga mat, free weights, jump rope, weighted balls and resistance bands. I was very content with my exercise program. About three years ago, my husband bought me a gym membership for my birthday. It was a really thoughtful gift, and I didn’t want to waste his money. I decided that for the span of the year, I’d make an effort to visit the gym at least three times per week. I planned to let the membership lapse after that. Within the first week of spending time at the gym, I’d changed my mind. The array of equipment is incredible. At home, I have one basic treadmill. At the gym, there is a row of state-of-the-art treadmills with all sorts of amazing features. There’s also a selection of top-of-the-line ellipticals, stairmasters, stationary bikes and rowing machines. There are all different types of strength training machines that target the various muscles in the shoulders, chest, back, arms and legs. There’s lots of extra amenities such as battle ropes, speed bags, heavy bags and an indoor track. I can swim laps in the indoor pool or soak in the sauna to relax. I love signing up for group fitness classes for something different. I’ve tried everything from pilates to boot camp.
