Wifi thermostat helps with vacation home

Plus, we’re able to keep an eye on things

A couple of years ago, my husband and I purchased a small home down south. We now divide our time, spending the spring and summer months up north and the fall and winter seasons down south. It is such a relief to escape the snow and freezing cold temperatures. When the weather becomes too hot and humid at our vacation house, we head north to milder temperatures. We enjoy the best of both locations. Since the homes are empty during the most severe weather, we adjust the thermostat to minimize energy use. However, there is always the concern of power outages or a malfunction with the furnace or air conditioner. In our vacation house, going without air conditioning wouldn’t be a huge problem. The high moisture levels might result in some mold or mildew growth. The hot, damp environment would certainly encourage the population of cockroaches, dust mites and other insects. Up north, a problem with the furnace could lead to way more expensive damage. We experience temperatures well below freezing for long periods of time. Without heat, it’s very possible the water pipes might freeze and even burst. We’ve managed to alleviate a lot of stress by installing a smart thermostat into each of the homes. This provides remote access to adjustment via our smartphones. Along with saving energy when the house is unoccupied, we can alter the temperature just prior to our arrival and come home to ideal comfort. Plus, we’re able to keep an eye on things. We get alerts if there’s a power failure, temperature fluctuation or issue with the heating or cooling equipment.
