For quite a few years, I ignored the upkeep up the HVAC duct.
It never occurred to me to have the system maintained.
I am conscientious about replacing air filters in the gas furnace and air conditioning. I make sure to schedule annual tune-ups for the heating and cooling units, and none of the suppliers who handled the job mentioned the HVAC duct; This network of pipes is essential to both heating and cooling. The air my family breathes travels through them several times per day just about year round, any contaminants that are concealed inside the ducts can easily become airborne during operation and spread to every room in the house. The buildup of debris also restricts airflow, making it more hard for the gas furnace and air conditioning to achieve and maintain the control equipment setting, then when the units are required to run longer, they use more energy and experience greater wear and tear, then my utility bills and the opportunity of a malfunction increase, and some of the harmful toxins that are often found inside HVAC duct include dust, dander, decomposing pests, rodent feces, bugs, construction materials and mold growth; Coughing, sneezing, congestion, headaches, insomnia and even nausea can be blamed on dirty ducts. I am now conscientious about scheduling professional HVAC duct inspection every year. If necessary, the supplier handles cleaning and/or sealing of the system. The cleaning process takes a couple of hours however causes no mess or damage. I instantly notice a difference in the cleanliness and comfort of the home. The air flowing from the vents smells better, but hopefully, by taking better care of the duct system, I can expect greater value and longevity from the entire heating and cooling system.
