It is not good if your evaporator coils are larger or smaller than your condenser coils. If the size of your evaporator and condenser coils do not match, you’ll have higher weekly energy bills, reduced unit lifespan, less comfort, and warranty violations. Evaporator coils are installed inside indoor air conditioning equipment. Condenser coils are in the outdoor unit. Manufacturers purposely design both sets of coils to work in tandem to remove heat and moisture from your home. In an ideal air conditioner, the two sets of coils match in capacity. The evaporator should be sized perfectly to soak up only as much heat as the condenser coils can dump into the outdoor air in one cooling cycle. There are some complications that can pop up when these coils don’t match. When mismatching happens, the smaller-sized coils can’t keep up with the capacity of the larger coils, which forces the HVAC system to run longer. The longer it runs, the more energy is wasted. When air conditioning coils are improperly matched, the efficiency and lifespan of these systems are significantly compromised. They put extra stress on your air conditioner system. If one set of coils often works harder to keep up with the other, it will eventually lead to extensive repairs and, possibly, early failure. If your condenser and evaporator coils do not match, it can also lead to more uneven temperatures and humidity levels in the home. If your evaporator coil is smaller than the condenser coils, it might give better dehumidification, but it cannot cool your home well. On the other hand, if your evaporator coil is larger than the condenser coils, your home will cool well, but the system will remove little to no moisture from the air. Most manufacturers specify that if you substitute either the evaporator coil or condenser coil, it must be the same size, or they will void any remaining time on the warranty. Manufacturers, understandably, designed both coils to work together. If one is substituted with a wrong size, manufacturers think breakdowns will be inevitable.
