I was talking to my brother last week.

I love my brother, but he has never had a lot of gumption.

I know he is the youngest of five sons, and quite spoiled, but I had hoped he would grow up after graduating from college.

He should have come out of school prepared to start life and a career. Instead of starting a career, he moved back in with mom and dad, and did nothing. Being the oldest son, I felt I should take him under my wing. I tried to talk to him about ‌being more than a beach bum. He needed to find his path in life. I even tried to shock him by reminding that mom and dad were in their sixties, and they wouldn’t always be there for him to sponge off. He looked at me with wild eyes and then nodded. He told me that if mom and dad didn’t want him, he would need to work. This sounded good until he said he would just get a job in my HVAC company. I wasn’t sure I would be amenable to hiring my brother in my HVAC company. Not only did he not have any gumption, but he was lazy. He said he had been going to HVAC certification classes over the last six months. He was at the top of his class and he was planning on asking me if I would give him an apprenticeship. For the first time in years, I had some hope for my brother. That didn’t mean I was sure if I wanted to hire him for my HVAC company.
