I took the position of the building supervisor when the old one quit. I was already helping out with odd tasks from time to time with the plumbing, Heating, AC, and other general problems around the building. The owner assumed I was knowledgeable enough to give me the building supervisor position. He really didn’t ask a lot of questions or ask for a resume. I didn’t disagree, because the position came with a free apartment and I was paying $1,200 every month. That freed up a lot of money for my savings account. Of course I ran into a ton of problems right away and one of those problems landed me in the emergency room. I had to help a resident with a radiator heater in their apartment. While I was working on the radiator heater problem, I burnt a large portion of my arm. The hair on my arm was burned and all of the skin was melted. I thought I was going to pass out from the pain and I decided to go to the emergency room. The apartment tenant called the owner of the building and told the guy exactly what occurred with the radiator heater. He called my cell phone while I was sitting in the waiting room being assessed by the doctor. The guy was concerned about my health and well-being and even offered to pay for some of the medical bills. I was surprised by his generous nature and didn’t expect to hear that. I thought he was going to tell me to pack up my apartment.
