Before Your Trip, Set Your Home on Vacation Mode

Vacationing this year? Before you depart, you will no doubt be making a list of things to do at home.

Make sure you prepare your HVAC for vacation. Good planning is the best deterrent against coming home to an uncomfortable surprise. Most likely, you will want to keep your air conditioner running while you’re away on summer vacation. Set it a few degrees higher than you would if you were home, but low enough that your plants and pets remain cool, and your electronics do not overheat. You will be able to tell if something has gone wrong with your air conditioner if you have a Wi-fi thermostat. If so, you can call the HVAC provider to schedule a repair. There are times when air conditioners break down. If you have pets or plants, you should arrange for someone to inspect your home. Please instruct your friend to contact you or your HVAC technician right away. Someone must be available to let the service person in. Overflowing condensate drains are another concern. Sometimes these drains get clogged, and condensation overflows, puddling on floors, and damaging carpets, baseboards, ceilings, and walls. Ensure everything around the A/C is dry, and that there are no dripping sounds coming from the interior cabinet. Schedule preventive maintenance on your A/C before you leave. Minor issues can be caught before they become major ones. Before you leave, change the air filter.
