How much insulation do I need in the walls?

I told him it is possible to over-insulate a house? I told him they asked the question of whether we are in jeopardy of having too much insulation, and their answer to their question is probably not

My husband insists on doing all the work in our house. We knew our home needed new insulation when we bought it. It was a fixer upper home. He thought he could do all the work, but I wasn’t so sure. When he asked me how much insulation we needed in the walls, I knew we were in trouble. I remembered my dad talking about insulation when he was building an addition to the house. He told mom we needed at least an R-23 for the exterior walls, and he told her how many rolls to buy. I told my husband this and he was okay. My question was; what is R-value? My husband told me I had a phone, so I should look it up. I didn’t know that R stands for resistance to heat flow, and the higher the R-Value, the more insulating power there is and there is more resistance to the loss of heat. I found this fascinating and I asked if there was a possibility of having too high of an R Value? Once again I went to my phone, and then I read him the answer. I told him it is possible to over-insulate a house? I told him they asked the question of whether we are in jeopardy of having too much insulation, and their answer to their question is probably not. Most homes have too little insulation and the man who wrote the article said he had never seen where they have too much. He told me that since I had all the answers, I should go to the home center, tell them what R Value we needed and how many feet of it we needed.
