My first year as an HVAC contractor

When most folks get an HVAC certification, they go to work for a contractor, but not me.

Way out here in the country there are no contractors.

When farmers and ranchers want to build a new barn, or fix a fence, they do it themselves. I knew the need for my skills existed, but there wasn’t a way to get paid for my work unless I went into business for myself. The last two years have been crazy, because I know heating and cooling systems but I don’t know how to run a business, so it has been a learning experience for sure. Without the help of my wife Bonnie I never would have been able to start. Bonnie knows nothing about HVAC systems but she is a wiz with numbers and accounting. With Bonnie in charge of the front office, I could focus entirely on handling service calls and fixing heaters and cooling systems. The first few weeks existed entirely of me handing out my new HVAC business cards to the locals, just to get the word out. I told everyone that if they ever needed work done on their heaters, AC units, or ventilation systems I would take care of them. It took a little while, but finally I started getting some calls, and making a few HVAC service calls to local farms. Once people saw how good I was at my job, and how quickly I could fix their heaters, business started to pick up. After 1 year I was doing great, and looking for a new HVAC tech to help me.
