Space furnace almost caused a apartment fire

My wife & I splurged a little bit & decided to get a small space heater, however my friend and I didn’t entirely need it for any room in particular, however my friend and I figured that my friend and I could use the space furnace for our study room.

This would allow us to change the thermostat in the rest of the apartment & save currency on bills! When my friend and I opened the box for our new space heater, my friend and I noticed that there was a warning label that you were not supposed to leave space heaters running when no one was home.

This meant that you would not be able to use the space furnace at night or while you weren’t at home. I figured that this was just one of those useless warning labels, & my friend and I both completely ignored it. I blocked that space furnace in, changed the thermostat to the rest of my house, & used the new space furnace during the night for a few months, then however, one night, something bad happened. My new space furnace became hot while my friend and I were sleeping, & it melted the whole power cord. I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the living room, & I realized that I odored burnt rubber in our house. The furnace wasn’t working, & I noticed that the cord was completely burned. You could see the bare wires underneath the rubber! Thankfully, the wires turned off the breaker, so my space furnace didn’t catch my apartment on fire, however it was a close call. I was shaken up though because I had heard horror stories of homes catching on fire from space heaters, however I didn’t suppose it would happen to me. I assume my friend and I need to listen to warning labels next time.
