I shut down my furnace during the Summer season

The weather is getting warmer, so I was finally able to turn off my furnace for the season.

This is a task that I perform every year once the weather is always hot outside.

If you don’t have a furnace this is foreign to you. Most people with the random traditional heat pumps will merely switch their thermostats from heating to cooling once the weather is hot outside. But because I have a gas furnace, there are a couple of steps that I need to take. First, I also need to shut off the pilot light of the furnace. Shutting down the pilot helps to save energy as well as it’s better for the environment because I am no longer burning natural gas. Once the pilot is finally shut off, I then shut down the main gas supply to the furnace. This doesn’t make a lot of difference on my energy bill, but doing this does help to conserve natural resources. The only downfall to shutting off the pilot as well as the gas is that I will need to relight the pilot once I am ready to use my furnace again. I have only done this a few times because I usually have my HVAC professional relight the pilot when I get my furnace worked on. And usually that happens once the weather switches back to being chilly again. If I had a newer furnace, I wouldn’t need my HVAC professional to relight the pilot for me. Until then, I will definitely continue my routine of turning off my pilot during the Summer months as well as have my professional relight it for me while she is performing the yearly maintenance.
