When to change the A/C filter

It’s not necessarily clear, cut, and dry as to when you should replace your HVAC air filters.

It really depends on the type of air filter, how often you use your HVAC system, and how much airborne contaminants and pollutants are swirling around in your air at any given time.

Some air filters are more efficient at trapping debris and are able to do so longer than others. Some HEPA air filters, for example, do not need to be replaced any more often than twice a year. Cheaper, more common air filters typically only last 3 months at the very most and that’s only if you do not use your air conditioner or heater constantly. Furthermore, things like pet dander and tobacco smoke or other airborne pollutants can necessitate changing out the air filter more frequently than that. You may even need to change out your air filter once a month if you are dealing with a lot of AC usage and a lot of airborne pollutants! Whenever you do, do not forget to replace your air filters whenever they start to accumulate a lot of buildup of dirt and dust and dander. Once they have been clogged with debris they are no longer effective at filtering air. Not changing out the air filter wreaks havoc on your HVAC system, so don’t skimp on it and don’t forget! You will think yourself in the long run for keeping up with such basic HVAC maintenance.
