Balancing the temperature upstairs and downstairs.

We recently moved into our first two story townhome.

  • The second bedroom upstairs had a great bay window that was perfect for my husband’s desk.

He works from home and we thought it would be a good place for the desk when we set up his office. He could see outside while working to keep an eye on the weather and the neighbors. It was great, until we discovered that the room was HOT! Not just from the sun pouring in the bay window but there did not seem to be any cool air coming out of the air conditioner register. This led to a very extensive and tedious trial and error process to get the cool air from the HVAC system to blow cold air into his office. Vents in the downstairs portion of the home were systematically closed off hoping to force cool air upstairs. The result was that all the cool air was blowing out the register in the stairwell and it was hot in the kitchen. The next experiment was directing the air conditioner register from the stairwell towards the office door and placing a fan outside the door to blow cool air into the office. This helped until my husband needed to close his office door to get work done when I was home. We finally made the decision to call in the HVAC technician. He crawled around in the attic and inspected the ductwork and checked out the HVAC unit itself. His final determination was that the ductwork was not installed properly to vent the cool air to the office. He made a small adjustment to the ductwork and the improvement in the amount of cool air was enough to make the office bearable.
