HVAC in Nursing Home Setting

I spent the last two years working in a Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.

Our residents and patients were primarily the elderly.

We had several residents that were determined to make the best of their stay and they were a joy to be around. Then there were some that were determined to be miserable and make others around them miserable. The long term residents rooms were all double rooms. This meant we often had conflicting personalities with roommates. One of the major conflicts between roommates tended to be the temperature in their room. Each room had a self contained heating and cooling unit and the residents controlled their own temperature. The disagreements over the heating and cooling often led to roommate changes which were disrupting to everyone. Our building was an older building and we were constantly adjusting the air conditioner in an attempt to help control the humidity in the building. On really humid days, the tile floors could become slippery and dangerous for the elderly. We had multiple HVAC systems in place for a building of our size and a huge generator in place to provide a cool room in the event of a hurricane or long term power outage. Also, our corporate offices required that our Plant Operations Manager be a certified HVAC technician. He had to take all the required classes in heating and cooling systems to be able to perform his job. His assistant had taken the classes for HVAC certification also, but had not yet passed the test. There were many hot August days they were on the roof of the building repairing the air conditioners in our old building to keep our residents comfortable and happy.
