Kids need to be active

It’s no secret that obesity is a big problem in this country.

  • This complex health issue now affects one out of five children and adolescents.

Behavior, community and genetics can be factors that lead to excess weight gain in young people. Eating high-calorie, low-nutrient foods and beverages are all too common. Plus, with the availability of technology, kids aren’t getting enough physical activity. They are spending more and more time watching television or focusing on other screen devices. For children to grow properly and maintain a healthy weight, a nutritious diet and being physically active are essential. Balancing calories consumed from foods and beverages with the calories burned through activity is the key to preventing excess weight gain. There needs to be an emphasis on eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, different lean proteins and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. The intake of foods and beverages containing added sugars, solid fats or sodium should be minimized. It is recommended that children above the age of six engage in at least sixty minutes of physical activity every day. Establishing an active and fit lifestyle at an early age provides benefits throughout the rest of their lives. There are lots of ways to encourage kids to get sweaty and get their hearts pumping. Most local areas offer organized sports for children, such as soccer, basketball, baseball and football. Kids should be encouraged to set aside the game controller and go ride their bikes, swim or make a snowman. Building strong muscles helps to defend against a very long list of potential health problems. Staying fit promotes greater confidence, appearance and energy levels.
