I love when the heat is off.
And we are finally to the part of the year where the heat is over.
Needless to say, this is one of the best times of year for me since the air conditioning isn’t running night and day. Actually, the rest of the year has some of the best weather there is. So I’m right where I want be when it comes to setting the thermostat. However, I spent four plus months over the summer making sure that we were doing all we could to save on HVAC cooling costs. It takes some discipline and a plan but it’s well worth it considering how much we save on utility costs related to the HVAC cooling. The first thing I do each spring is get the heat pump serviced by an HVAC professional. This way, I know the HVAC equipment will be at its most efficient and I won’t have to fear a breakdown in the middle of all the heat. Then I make sure that our house is sealed up tight. This means replacing worn weather stripping or sealing a crack or gap in the exterior. During the summer, I close all the blinds to windows that get direct sun. This stops direct sunlight heating which helps a lot. Finally, I just make sure that our thermostat is never set cooler than 15 degrees below what the outside temperature is during the afternoon. These are the basics and we also utilize fans a lot more as well. But anyone can do this and the result is excellent HVAC savings.
