Helping carry heavy equipment turns out to be a mistake

My roommate and I were on our way back from class yesterday when we noticed an older guy having a difficult time moving some heavy boxes.

My roommate and I offered to help him move the boxes.

He was going to the 5th floor, but we were happy to help. My roommate and I received $5 each as a tip, and we use the money to go over to Starbucks and buy a caramel latte and a cookie. When my roommate and I came back with our coffee, there was a police officer at our door. He had a stern and mean look on his face. He started asking questions about the man with the heavy boxes. My roommate and I were very puzzled. Then we found out that the guy stole items from another apartment. The heavy boxes contained a furnace and an air conditioner. My roommate and I never thought to ask the guy if the boxes belonged to him or not. It turns out that the furnace and air conditioner were stolen from another apartment on the 1st floor. My roommate and I felt like idiots. The cops were ready to charge us with a crime. We tried to plead innocent and explain our mistakes. Luckily, the guy started walking down the stairs as the police were yelling and screaming. We told them that was the guy. They chased the guy up the stairs and finally caught him and made an arrest. Thank goodness we did not get charged with stealing someone else’s furnace and air conditioner. I can’t afford to hire a lawyer.
