Neighborhood turning unsafe prompts installation of security system

My husband and I were both raised in the same farming community.

While we were growing up, people never locked their homes or their cars.

Crime wasn’t something we worried about. I don’t think any of the local retail stores bothered with surveillance cameras or alarm systems. Things have slowly changed for the worse. A little over four years ago, there was a series of robberies in our local area. The intruders entered houses in the middle of the afternoon and made off with electronics, jewelry, money and any item of value that they could carry easily. Our house was among those that were robbed. I am so relieved that my children were not at home. My twins were twelve-years-old at the time, and we had just started allowing them to be home on their own. Following the robbery, we had trouble feeling secure in the house again. Despite improving the locks on the doors, we didn’t feel any safer. My husband and I finally added a home security system. This wireless system includes alarms, motion sensors, window sensors and automated door locks. If a door or window is accessed, there are a few minutes that allows for the security code to be entered into the system before the alarm is triggered. A monitoring company then contacts my husband and I and requests our password. If we fail to respond with the correct password, the authorities are dispatched. Just having the signs that indicate our house is covered by a security plan will probably discourage most intruders. My family is more comfortable knowing that the house is securely locked. No one can enter without us being instantaneously aware of the intrusion.
