Storm brings out underlying roof problem

That makes it at least 40 years old

Last night’s storm did a real number on our roof. I woke up in the middle of the night with water dripping on my head. I can’t say that I was surprised. After all, the storm was a pretty bad one. In the morning, it was clear that several of our shingles had been ripped off. Many of them were still lying in our front yard. We were lucky to get away with such little damage though. One of my neighbors had a tree fall on his car. Still, we couldn’t go about our lives with a leaky roof. I called several roofing contractors before finding one that was available to come out for emergency roof repair. I thought it would be just a simple fix and that it would take less than an hour to replace the missing shingles so that our roof wouldn’t leak anymore. That did not turn out to be the case. The roofing contractor recommended that we have our entire roof redone with new EPDM roofing put underneath the shingles. They explained that it’s not only the shingles that keep the rain out. There is a rubber mat that goes under the shingles that also repels water. Apparently our roof was in pretty bad shape and we weren’t even aware of it. I was shown several spots where water had been leaking through my roof for years now. How had I not noticed this? I assume that the roof is as old as this house. That makes it at least 40 years old. I guess it’s due for a new roof anyway. I might as well get it done.
